Why Did Jesus Die? Personal Stories and Illustrations
When you love someone, what do you want more than anything else? You want a deep and lasting relationship with that person. I don't think it is possible to ever love someone and not want to have a relationship with that person. I remember when Grace and I first met for the second time (it was love at second sight), I started to be very attracted to her. My roommate and I stayed up hours at night trying to figure out the most natural way for me to get to know her. I can't say I was in love at that point, but nonetheless, I longed for a relationship with her. As I got to know her better, and as I fell in love with her, the one thing I wanted more than anything else was a mutual loving relationship with her. Multiply that by a million and you have God's perfect love for us, which propels His desire for a relationship with us.

I have three kids - a 7 year old and 3 1/2 year old twins. Let's say my 7 year old developed cancer and was dying. But somehow, if I could put my hands on her and take her cnacer away and transfer it to me, I would do it in a snap, even if it meant suffering and eventual deaht for me. Now, if all three of our kids had cancer, I would do the same for all of them, even if it multiplied my pain and suffering threefold. Now the perfectly loving God, in the person of Jesus Christ, took the cancer of the whole world and the excrutiating pain adn suffering multiplied by 6 billion people upon Himself, and suffered and died and experienced hell so that we might be healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5)
