How Can I Be Filled with the Holy spirit? Stories and Illustrations
Who likes to cook outdoors on a grill? I do if the weather is nice. Ah, the smell of sizzling steaks is great! We used to have an old gas grill that had a bottle of propane I got from my dad by trading him an electric grill. It uses gas pretty fast, but I never had a gas grill so I didn’t know how much it was supposed to use. When I went to light it I would stick a lit match up from underneath and turn on the burner – POP, a ball of fire would burst out then, just as quick, go out. It was like the proverbial “Flash-In-The-Pan.” If I waited a few minutes before trying it again, it would do the same thing. After some singed eyebrows and arm hair, I learned to stay back as far as possible. Then my dear wife stepped out the door and asked, “Did you remember to turn on the gas valve at the bottle?”
How ridiculous, of course I remembered to turn on the gas… Oh yeah, you mean the knob on top of the bottle? Of course, I … hadn’t. When I turned on the valve, the burner would light normally and we had plenty of heat to cook with. What a wonderful idea, turn on the supply of gas!
You see, the valve on the bottle had a slow leak in it and it would let a little gas into the line to the burner. When I put a lit match to it, it would light in a fire ball, but it would not sustain the flame and it wouldn’t provide heat for cooking, just singing my eyebrows.
When I remembered to turn the gas valve fully on we had lots of heat to cook, provided there was any gas left.
