The role of the pastor
The support of the pastor is vital to the success of Alpha. The key responsibilities of the pastor are:
- Casting vision for the parish mission of evangelization
- Encouraging outreach to the community and those who are disconnected from the Church
- Encouraging the laity and offering instruction on their baptismal call as it relates to evangelization
- Welcoming the guests and newcomers to the parish, especially on the first night of Alpha
- Short talks or testimonies at Mass shortly before the course mobilizes the parish community
The Alpha course works best when it is run by the laity. The pastor is not required for the administration of the course but his support to the team is invaluable. Some priests choose to deliver the talks live but it is not necessary as the talks are delivered in a compelling and doctrinally sound manner.
