Step Five – Run your Alpha Course

An Alpha course should generally follow this timetable. Prayer is the foundation of a strong Alpha course.  We encourage all host and helpers to begin praying for their small groups right from the start.  For more information on prayer, please click here.

30-45 minutes   Prayer/Administration meeting for hosts and helpers

40 minutes
Meal, snack or refreshments.  Guests are assigned to a small group as they arrive for the first time. The group eats and gets to know each other by discussing work, home lives, family and sports - but not religion.
10 minutes
Welcome
• Announcements
• Mention recommended reading
• Joke or humor
10 minutes
Worship
45 minutes
Talk - use the Alpha DVD's or a live speaker who has prepared the talks based on each chapter of Alpha - Questions of Life and has referred to Giving Live Talks.
15 minutes
Optional coffee break 
45 minutes
Small group discussion time.  This is the time for guests to respond to the talk, share their opinions and discuss issues that are relevant to them. Hosts help direct the conversation, but resist giving another "talk".
Finish Make every effort to finish your small group on time every week.
